How To Clean Your Yoga Mat

Cork Is Easy to Clean

No one likes the smell of accumulated sweat on their yoga mat or the chemical based sprays that are usually provided at the gym. Thanks to the natural antimicrobial and antibacterial qualities of cork, keeping your mat clean is a lot easier than a regular yoga mat. Any bacteria that does make its way onto your mat will not be able to live there. With very minimal upkeep, it’s easy to enjoy a fresh smelling surface every time you roll your cork yoga mat out.

How Often Should I Clean My Mat?

To know the answer to this question, there are a few things to think about first, like – how often do you practice on your yoga mat? Where do you practice? At home, the gym/studio or maybe the beach? What type of yoga, stretching or other workouts might you be doing?
Over time it is easy to tell when your mat needs a little cleaning and a lot of the time, it comes down to your personal preference.
If you are an at-home yogi, it is easy to get away with a quick clean every two-three weeks.
As a yogi adventurer, you may want to clean your mat more often due to dirt and oil build up. We recommend a wipe down once a week in this case.

If you’re the type to get deep into your practice and sweat enough, it is a good idea to give your mat a quick wipe afterward to remove surface dirt and oil before rolling your mat up.
Don’t worry, cork doesn’t absorb sweat or water…it actually wicks away and dries super quick!
May be you can wash your mat with fresh water once in a while to really wash away anything that might have accumulated on it.

How Do I Clean My Cork Yoga Mat?

It’s simple. To clean the cork surface of your yoga mat, just take a damp cloth and wipe away any dirt or natural body oil off your mat. That’s it! For a deeper clean, you can add a touch of gentle soap, essential oil or a DIY Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray and give it a good gentle rub. Afterwards, wipe down the surface with a dry cloth or let your mat air dry before rolling it back up.  Just make sure not to use a rough material, like a scrubbing sponge, as this can damage the surface.

DIY Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray

If you want to clean your mat with your own yoga mat cleaning spray, here is how to make one!
  1. Reuse a spray bottle you already have or find a durable glass spray bottle.
  2. Fill it with ½ – ¾ water.
  3. Fill the rest with white vinegar.
  4. Add desired amount of essential oils.

Spray the surface of your mat with it and wipe down with a soft cloth. This spray is also environmentally friendly and kind to your kids and pets!
